subway   -    Underground  -  light rail   + Co.

This page is dedicated to Jim Woodward, who is an expert on public transportation and a heck of a nice guy.

On our tours we visit many European cities using hop on/hop off tour buses or regular sightseeing companies.
We use public transportation only when there is no other alternative and try to avoid the busy subway systems.

We honestly had no idea that some train enthusiasts are also very interested in the public transportation system,
especially when it runs on a track.  We have, however, learned that some even "collect" these rides.

On our Grand Tour they can "check off" 10 cities from their lists and put many tickets, plans and schedules
into their collections  -  and of course we are more than happy to help and assist in any way we can.

Early public transport in London began with horse-drawn omnibus services in 1829, which were gradually replaced by the first motor omnibuses in 1902.  Colloquially known as the Tube, London Underground is the first metro system in the world, having begun operations in 1863. More than 3 million passengers travel on the Underground every day, amounting to over 1 billion passenger journeys (per year since 2006).

The horse-drawn omnibus became Paris' first form of public transportation from 1828. The horse-drawn tramway was next to appear from 1871. One hundred years after its initiation, Paris's metro has 14 lines and is the second busiest metro system in Europe after Moscow.
It carries 4.5 million passengers a day!

cologne

The Cologne Stadtbahn is a light rail system. The term Stadtbahn denotes a system that includes elements of trams as well as an underground railway  network (U-Bahn), and interuban rail, even including three lines that are licensed as heavy rail and used by freight trains as well as Stadtbahn vehicles.

hamburg

The Hamburg traffic group Hamburger Verkehrsverbund was the first organisation of its kind in the world and in 2008 it was in charge of the public transport management in three German states. In 2007, more than 618 million passengers used bus, rapid transit, ferries or light rail.

berlin

Picture
Berlin has the largest and most extensive public transport network of its type in Germany. It is one of the most modern systems in all of Europe and its nine lines extend a total of 151.7 kilometres, and serve 170 stations.
The Berlin underground system is used by more than one million people every day.
The trains of the Berlin underground system run up to 132 million kilometres every year.

Put another way, the trains circle the globe nine times every single day.

stuttgart

Stuttgart has a light rail system known as the Stuttgart Stadtbahn. In the city center and densely built-up areas, the Stadtbahn runs underground.
A peculiarity of Stuttgart is the Zahnradbahn - powered by electricity and the only urban rack railway in Germany.

muenchen

The Munich U-Bahn (subway) network has 62.3 mi) of active lines and 100 stations. Trains operate at speeds up to 80 km/h - the top speed among German U-Bahns.

luzern

The Lucerne system is one of only two trolleybus systems worldwide that still utilize the rigid concace bus and the trailer consortium form of operation. In addition, the Lucerne system is one of only three trolleybus systems in Switzerland still using rigid vehicles

Nuernberg

The Nuremberg U-Bahn is Germany's newest metro. Its DT1 vehicles are largely the same design as the A cars found on the Munich U-Bahn, and both
transport companies used to lend each other trainsets as reserve rolling stock for major events (such as the Munich Olympics) at the time when both systems were quite new.

zuerich

Zürich is famous for its highly efficient, clean and safe public transport system.  The network includes trams, buses (local city/municipality buses as well as the yellow bright Swiss PostAuto buses), suburban trains (S-Bahn), regular trains (SBB), cable cars and boats.
