World's largest steam festival
This festival takes place every 2 years in the city of Dordrecht in the Netherlands, southeast of Rotterdam.
It takes place 2014, May 23, 24 & 25 and a 1/4 million visitors can't be wrong unless you don't like big
and real steam: www.dordtinstoom.nl
About Dordrecht:
- Dordrecht is the oldest city in Holland with a rich history and culture. It has harbors, but no canals!
- The Dordrechts Museum, founded in the year 1842, is one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands. In 1 1/2 centuries it has built up an over 400 years old collection of Dutch paintings: from Dutch Golden Age masters to contemporary art.
- The Grote Kerk ('Great Church') was built between 1285 and 1470. The 65-meter tower contains a carillon with
67 bells including one weighing 9830 kilos, making it the heaviest bell in the Netherlands.
- The major green attraction on Dordrecht island is National Park De Biesbosch. It is one of the largest freshwater tidal areas within Europe.
To be very clear, the festival covers all kinds of steam applications of the past. Activities and exhibits are divided
into: 15% for trains, 15% for models and toys, 30% for street machines, rollers, cranes etc. and 30% for
tugs and boats. The event is unique - Nowhere else in the world is it possible to enjoy steam-on-land, steam-on-water and steam-on-rails - all at the same time:)
On the schedule are:
the steam trains, buses and everything necessary to move around town and go to all places as often
as you wish.
Our standard May tour starts in Amsterdam and after 2 days of sightseeing in Amsterdam and a bit of time in Rotterdam, we dedicate the next 2 1/2 days to this absolutely spectacular and unique event. Afterwards we will continue on to Hamburg and then have an exciting new itinerary planned for you.
For a detailed itinerary please go to this page: http://www.modeltraintravel.com/may-2014-itinerary.html
If you only have time for Amsterdam and the festival, we can make arrangements for you to return from Amsterdam earlier, book a river cruise at a discount in combination with our tour, or enjoy Europe on your own (ask us for help!).
